Billing for Communication

Introduction

This document introduces the real-time communication billing policy for Agora.

Policy

Overview

Agora real-time communication includes:

  • Audio Communication : All users in a channel communicate with each other only using voice.

  • Video Communication : Users in a channel communicate with each other with image and voice. According to different aggregate resolution, the video communication is separated into three levels with different prices:

    • SD (Standard Definition)
    • HD (High Definition)
    • HD+ (Super Definition)

Note

For more details on the differences among SD, HD and HD+, see video communication.

The service is free if the monthly audio and video usage is less than 10,000 minutes. The 10,000 minutes are deducted in the order of Audio, Video(SD, HD and HD+). For example,

Communication Level How to deduct the 10, 000 minutes from each month?
Audio Audio
  • If the minutes of audio communication > 10, 000 minutes, deduct the 10,000 from the audio communication.
  • If the minutes of audio communication <10, 000 minutes, continue to deduct the remaining minutes from Video(SD).
Video SD
  • If audio minutes + SD minutes > 10, 000 minutes, deduct the remaining minutes from this level.
  • If audio minutes + SD minutes < 10, 000 minutes, continue to deduct the remaining minutes from Video(HD)
Video HD The logic is the same as above until the 10, 000 minutes are deducted completely.
Video HD+ The logic is the same as above until the 10, 000 minutes are deducted completely.

Audio Communication

Charging Standards

Audio communication is charged according to minutes and the number of people.

After deducting the monthly 10,000 minutes, Agora charges you:

Scenario Total Fee
Recording is disabled. Communication Fee [1] = Audio Unit Price x Total Communication Minutes
Recording is enabled. [2] Communication Fee + Recording Fee = Audio Unit Price x Total Communication Minutes + Audio Unit Price x Total Recording Minutes

Footnotes

[1]Unit Price is the price per minute, which can be found at Agora.io official website.
[2]No matter how many users are recording at the same time in a channel, the recording of the entire channel will only be charged as one stream.

Example 1: Audio-only

User Communication Minutes Communication Fee
A 30 Audio Unit Price x (30+40+20+15) min
B 40
C 20
D 15
User 10 min 20 min 30 min 40 min Recording Fee
A Recording Recording Recording   Audio Unit Price x 40 min
B   Recording Recording Recording
C Recording Recording
D Recording

In this example, Agora charges you: Communication Fee + Recording Fee

Video Communication

Charging Standards

Video communication is charged according to minutes, number of people and resolution.

After deducting the monthly 10,000 minutes, Agora charges you:

Scenario [3] Total Fee
Recording is disabled. If all users are at the same level: Communication Fee = Unit Price for the level x Total Communication Minutes
If not all users are at the same level: Communication Fee = Σ(Unit Price for each level x Total Minutes for each level) [4]
Recording is enabled. If all users are at the same level: Communication Fee + Recording Fee =Unit Price for the level x Total Communication Minutes + Unit Price for the level x Total Recording Minutes
If not all users are at the same level: Communication Fee + Recording Fee = Σ(Unit Price for each level x Total Communication Minutes for each level) + Σ(Unit Price for each level x Total Recording Minutes for each level)

Footnotes

[3]For communication, each user will be calculated as one stream based on the user’s communication aggregate resolution. For recording, no matter how many users are recording at the same time in a channel, the entire channel is calculated as one stream based on the recording aggregate resolution of all users .
[4]Σ is a Mathematical symbol. It means to sum up the values.

Here, the unit price the price per minute which can be found at Agora.io official website. The unit price is the same for communication and recording of the same level, which is decided by the aggregate resolution:

Level Aggregate Resolution
SD Resolution < 640x360
HD 640x360≤ Resolution ≤1280x720
HD+ Resolution >1280x720

Note

All the examples in this document assume that the users do not change their resolution within a certain period, but in real practice, if any user changes the resolution, both communication and recording aggregate resolution change according.

See the following for how to calculate the communication and recording aggregate resolution respectively:

Calculating the Communication Aggregate Resolution

For example, 4 users in a channel now, A, B, C and D. For the user A, the aggregate resolution sums up the image area(Width * Height) of each user resolution.

For example,

  • B area = 640x360 = 230400
  • C area = 240x180 = 43200
  • D area = 640x360 = 230400

Then, the aggregate resolution for user A = B area + C area + D area = 504000

And since 640x360<547200<1280x720, thus User A should be charged according to the HD level fee.

Calculating the Recording Aggregate Resolution

For example, 4 users in a channel now, A, B, C and D. The aggregate resolution sums up the image area(Width * Height) of each user resolution.

For example,

  • A area = 240x180 = 43200
  • B area = 640x360 = 230400
  • C area = 240x180 = 43200
  • D area = 640x360 = 230400

Then, the aggregate resolution for recording = A area + B area + C area + D area = 547200

And since 640x360<547200<1280x720, thus the recording is charged according to the HD level fee.

Note

In the above example, if B user only uses audio, which means B area = 0. Then the aggregate resolution for recording = A area + B area + C area + D area = 316800.

Since 640x360<316800<1280x720, thus the recording is still charged according to the HD level fee.

See the following examples for details:

Example 1: SD
